Coulomb blockade in field electron emission from carbon nanotubes

We report the observation of Coulomb blockade in field electron emission (FE) from single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which is manifested as pronounced steps FE current-voltage curves and oscillatory variations energy distribution emitted electrons. The appearance explained by formation nanoscale protrusions at apexes SWCNTs due to electric field-assisted surface diffusion adsorbates adatoms. proposed adsorbate-assisted mechanism substantially different well-known resonant tunneling associated with discrete electronic states adsorbed atoms. simulations based on theory are excellent agreement experimental results. SWCNT emitters controlled effect expected be used develop on-demand coherent single-electron sources for advanced vacuum nanoelectronic devices.
